DYLAN: a growing and healthy project

At the end of March, the European Commission has delivered its second review of the Project, and the results of the external reviewers are quite satisfying: DYLAN has been evaluated as "Good to Excellent Project", "carefully worked out, ambitious and innovative", and many positive facets have been stressed by the reviewers.

It was appreciated that "teams were working continuously on development of research questions and methodological frameworks, and yet despite all this, they also successfully produced first results". Further DYLAN's intense activities in dissemination, its collaboration with related projects and external universities as well as networking with "European institutions and prominent actors at the European Commission" through the Advisory Board were highlighted. The reviewers consider the "overall plan ... convincing, and efficiently managed by the Project Coordinator and the management team."

Languages In a Network of European Excellence

LINEE, the European linguistic Network of Excellence has published his third periodic newsletter, which is downloadable directly at the LINEE website.
DYLAN and LINEE, two main actors in European research on multilingulism, collaborate closely in the preparation of joint recommendations to the European Commission in terms of both future research and policies. Moreover, PhD student exchanges take place between the two projects.

Methods of Critical Discourse Analysis 2nd Edition

Ruth Wodak's Methods of Critical Discourse Analysis provides a concise, comprehensible and thoroughly up-to-date introduction to CDA, appropriate for both novice and experienced researchers.

This new edition has been updated throughout, with a new introduction contextualizing the development of the CDA approach, and two entirely new chapters on the 'social actor approach' to CDA and the use of quantitative corpus linguistic methods. The editors have brought together contributions from leading experts in the field, who each introduce their own approaches to CDA. Examples are included throughout, demonstrating the value of the method in analyzing a variety of genres of written material on a whole range of topics, including global warming, leadership in management, and globalization.

This book will be of great interest to students and researchers in linguistics, sociology and psychology interested in interdisciplinary approaches to coping with topical social problems.
