The 19th Sociolinguistics Symposium will be hosted by the Freie Universität Berlin in Germany (August 22-24, 2012). The general theme of the 2012 conference will be 'Language and the city'.

Calls and deadlines: The first Call has been published in June 2011. It concerns the submission of thematic sessions (deadline: September 15, 2011 - please also refer to the conference website). The Call for individual presentations (papers and posters) will be published in October 2011.

Results of DYLAN Research by Lancaster University Published in Prestigious Language Policy Journal

Results of research conducted within the DYLAN Project by Lancaster University Researchers Michal Krzyzanowski and Ruth Wodak has just been published in the prestigious Language Policy journal listed on, inter alia, Journal Citation Reports and Social Sciences Citation Index. In their article “Political strategies and language policies: the European Union Lisbon strategy and its implications for the EU’s language and multilingualism policy” published in Language Policy 10(12), Krzyzanowski and Wodak explore the interplay between the politics and policies of multilingualism by looking at the role of political macro-strategies in shaping language and multilingualism policies in the European Union. Drawing on the extensive analyses conducted in the course of DYLAN research, the paper targets the relationship between the European Union’s 2000–2010 Lisbon Strategy on the European Knowledge-Based Economy and the content and scope of EU language and multilingualism policies of the same period. 7th AICLU conference - VII° Convegno AICLU -VII. AICLU-Tagung

The 7th AICLU conference from 7 to 9 July 2011 will be organized by the Language Centre of the Free University of Bolzano at the premises of the Faculty. The decision to organize such a conference in South-Tyrol was made plausible because of the historic, demographic and ethnic background and the somewhat natural vocation towards multilingualism of this province. The Free University of Bolzano with its ambitious trilingual approach (English, German and Italian are the languages of tuition) contributes strongly to the discussion on multilingualism. The conference will offer various occasions to get to know the organizing university and to exchange ideas on topics such as CLIL and innovation in language teaching in Italian universities.

Il VII Convegno AICLU dal titolo “Multilinguismo, CLIL e innovazione didattica” verrà organizzato dal Centro linguistico della Libera Università di Bolzano e si svolgerà dal 7 al 9 luglio 2011 presso la sede della Facoltà di Scienze della Formazione a Bressanone.
Per vari aspetti il luogo si presta ad una riflessione approfondita sul multilinguismo in ambito universitario. L’Alto Adige ha una vocazione bi– e multilingue forte e quasi naturale dal punto di vista linguistico, demografico ed etnico. Il multilinguismo è sempre al centro dell’attenzione. La Libera Università di Bolzano si inserisce in questo contesto con un progetto trilinuge molto ambizioso con inglese, italiano e tedesco come lingue di insegnamento. Il convegno quindi darà la possibilità di conoscere meglio l’approccio trilingue dell’ateneo ospitante, di confrontarsi su teoria e la prassi del Content Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) ed su altri temi importanti per i centri linguistici universitari in Italia.

Die 7. AICLU-Tagung wird vom Sprachenzentrum der Freien Universität Bozen ausgerichtet und findet vom 7. Bis 9. Juli 2011 am Sitz der Bildungswissenschaftlichen Fakultät in Brixen statt. Die Wahl des Tagungsortes fiel aus mehreren Gründen leicht, wenn es um das Thema Mehrsprachigkeit im Hochschulbereich geht, denn Südtirol hat zum einen starken historischen, ethnischen und demografischen Bezug zu sprachlichen Fragen. Die Freie Universität Bozen fügt sich mit ihrem ambitionierten Modell der Dreisprachigkeit mit Deutsch, Englisch und Italienisch als Unterrichtssprachen in diesen Kontext ein. Die Tagung bietet somit die Möglichkeit, den Tagungsort und die Freie Universität Bozen besser kennen zu lernen und sich gleichzeitig über Theorie und Praxis des universitären Sach-Fach-Unterrichts (CLIL) und andere Themen auszutauschen, die für die italienischen Universitäts-Sprachenzentren von Belang sind.

An interesting alternative for funding mobility in research: The European Institutes for Advanced Study (EURIAS) Fellowship Programme is an international researcher mobility programme offering 10-month residencies in one of the 14 participating Institutes: Berlin, Bologna, Brussels, Bucharest, Budapest, Cambridge, Helsinki, Jerusalem, Lyons, Nantes, Paris, Uppsala, Vienna, Wassenaar.

Their fellowships support the "focused, self-directed work of outstanding researchers".

Last year NET4SOCIETY, a network of the 44 National Contact Points (NCPs) for Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities (SSH), carried out a survey about the experiences of researchers from the scoio-economic sciences and humanities with FP7.

The full results of the survey have recently been published and presented to the European Commission.

Deadline for call for submissions to the ECML´s 4th programme approaching

Applications for the 4th programme of the European Centre for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe “LEARNING THROUGH LANGUAGES: Promoting inclusive, plurilingual and intercultural education” (2012-2015) can still be submitted up until 1 May 2011.

Within the Call, the ECML is seeking two kinds of submissions: proposals for projects relating to one or more of the working areas of the programme and tenders, individual expressions of interest in leading or contributing to projects outlined by the ECML. Applicants should normally be living and working in a member state of the ECML. In certain cases, applications from non-member states as team members (not as coordinators) can be accepted.
Also the Road Show for the promotion for the Call is in its final month. After presentations in Armenia, Austria, Belgium, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovenia, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the ECML is promoting the call in the Netherlands (Leeuwarden, 7-8 April) and the Czech Republic (Prague, 8 April).
