“Language Dynamics and Management of Diversity"

Neue europäische Blickwinkel auf die Mehrsprachigkeit?

Im Laufe vieler Jahrtausende hat sich in Europa ein Sprachenmosaik entwickelt, das zurzeit aufgrund von Globalisierung und internationaler Mobilität einem tiefgehenden Wandel ausgesetzt ist.

Wie die Forschung auf die Veränderung der Sprachenlandschaft und des sprachlichen Verhaltens reagiert, ist einer der Schwerpunkte der Diskussionsveranstaltung "Neue Blickwinkel auf die europäische Mehrsprachigkeit?", die am Donnerstag, 30. September 2010, am Campus der Universität Wien stattfindet. Die Veranstaltung ist Teil des interdisziplinären EU-Projekts ELDIA.

Mit den DYLAN-Mitgliedern Ruth Wodak und Barbara Seidlhofer sowie der LINEE-Forscherin Rosita Schjerve-Rindler nehmen zwei weitere grosse EU-Projekte an der Diskussion teil.

The SAGE Handbook of Sociolinguistics

The SAGE Handbook of Sociolinguistics will be published soon. Directed by University of Lancaster Ruth Wodak, Barbara Johnstone & Paul E Kerswill, it also contains contributions from DYLAN Coordinators Anne-Claude Berthoud and Georges Lüdi.

Ruth Wodak in the Academia Europea

We would like to congratulate on behalf of DYLAN WP2 Manager Ruth Wodak who has just become a member of the prestigious Academia Europea. The latter is a functioning European Academy of Humanities, Letters and Sciences, composed of individual members, and membership is by invitation.

DYLAN doctoral school: Deadline for application extended

We are pleased to announce that the deadline for application to the second DYLAN doctoral school has been extended. The new deadline is 15 July 2010.

Aiming at fostering the dialogue on multilingualism and linguistic diversity in Europe and beyond, the school will explore the following topics:

- Incentives in language behaviour
- Models of Language dynamics
- Socio-psychological dimensions of individual multilingualism

The Economics of the Multilingual Workplace

DYLAN WP4 Manager François Grin is the co-author of this new publication (in collaboration with Claudio Sfreddo and François Vaillancourt), which proposes a path-breaking study of the economics of multilingualism at work, proposing a systematic approach to the identification and measurement of the ways in which language skills and economic performance are related. Conference “Migrations: Interdisciplinary Perspectives”

The Forum for Interdisciplinary Dialogue: “Ideas, Innovation and Communication” will organise this international symposium, dedicated to the discussion of the multiple interdisciplinary dimensions of ‘migrations’, both from the viewpoints of the Social Sciences and Humanities as well as from the manifold perspectives of the Natural Sciences.
It will be held at the University of Vienna on the 1-3 July 2010, and is co-organised by DYLAN’s WP2 Manager Ruth Wodak. You can satisfy your curiousity on the conference website, available here.

UAB Work session on teaching in English at university: IV Trobada sobre Semiimmersió a Catalunya: Ensenyament en Anglès a la Universitat Cosmopolita.

The UAB DYLAN team participated in the organisation of a work session directed at university teaching staff, policy makers and the broader university community, held on 01 June, 2010. UAB DYLAN members Luci Nussbaum and Cristina Escobar presented findings from the UAB DYLAN team’s research. University authorities and professors experienced in teaching content subjects in English at the UAB also spoke.
