The 40th conference of the German Applied Linguistics association (Dt. Gesellschaft für Angewandte Linguistik) will take place in Leipzig, D on 15-17 Sep 2010.
The theme of section 9 on Intercultural communication and multilingual discourse concerns the analysis of intercultural communication and multilingual discourse. The main focus of this workshop is on presentations of empirical research results, theoretical as well as methodological inquiries into intercultural communication along with multilingual discourse and aspects dealing with its practical use.

MA in Discourse Studies at Lancaster University

Lancaster University announces that places are still available for 2010 enrolment in the new, campus-based MA in Discourse Studies, which has developed out of the successful MA in Language Studies.
This new programme builds on Lancaster’s internationally recognised strengths in the field of discourse studies. Within this field Lancaster is best-known for its distinctive approaches to pragmatics, stylistics, and critical discourse analysis, due to the teaching involvement of Ruth Wodak, Greg Myers, Elena Semino and Veronika Koller. The degree is specifically designed to give you the competence to undertake empirical work in discourse studies which draws on both linguistic and social theory.
The scheme will help you to realise your potential, whether you are studying for personal development, further academic study, or employment in a broad range of areas, including teaching in the UK and abroad, research, publishing and the media. The programme begins in early October and the application deadline is 30 June 2010.

An expert Seminar on the “Added Value of Multilingualism and Multilingual Education”Call for Papers will take place on 3 – 4 June 2010, Leeuwarden/Ljouwert, Fryslân, The Netherlands.
The seminar will be organised by the Mercator Research Centre and the Basque Government. The project “Added value of multilingualism and multilingual education” will be the central focus of the seminar. This multi-annual project is carried out by the Mercator Research Centre in collaboration with the University of the Basque Country. It is a comparative study of the Basque Autonomous Community and the province of Fryslân. It aims at:
1) analyzing bilingualism and multilingualism as a resource for the individual and society
2) analyzing bilingualism and multilingualism as a resource at school
Abstracts should be send to mhanenburg@fryske-akademy.nl by Monday 1st March 2010.

We would like to congratulate Professor Rita Franceschini of Libera Università di Bolzano / Freie Universität Bozen on contributing a chapter on "The genesis and development of research in multilingualism" to the book "The Exploration of Multilingualism", edited by Larissa Aronin (University of Haifa) and Britta Hufeisen (Danmarks Tekniske Universitet). The chapter draws on the work of the European Commission's High Level Group on Multilingualism, of which Professor Franceschini was a member.
